What’s this about?

RFID software is a game-changer in modern supply chains. Different RFID software enable various applications, from asset tracking to inventory management, access control, and counterfeit protection. Companies often use customized RFID software solutions. The specially developed RFID software “RFID Hub” is used by a Canadian hospital for asset tracking and localization. A self-developed RFID software is being used by a laundry company in Portugal for the management of laundry items.

What is RFID Software?

Software is defined as instructions, data, or programs used to operate computers and execute specific tasks. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) software processes and analyzes the data that is transmitted to and received from RFID devices like readers or printers. Together with RFID hardware, RFID software form an RFID system that enables various applications such as asset management, asset tracking, inventory control and management, access control, supply chain management, and security applications.

What Kinds of RFID Software Are There?

There are many different types of RFID software available on the market. In addition to the RFID middleware, there is an RFID software for every RFID application. The most common RFID software types are listed below.

RFID Middleware

RFID middleware is a software component in an RFID system. It acts as the intermediary layer that manages the data flow between the RFID hardware and enterprise applications. The primary functions of the RFID middleware include the management of RFID devices, as well as the filtering and aggregation of data that originate from RFID tags after the data capturing process by wireless RFID readers. RFID middleware is a unified interface that is used to process and manage data.

Event management is another critical function of RFID middleware. In an RFID system, specific events, such as the movement of a tagged item into a particular zone, can trigger various actions. The middleware monitors these events in real-time. It detects specific conditions and executes predefined actions, such as sending alerts, updating databases, or initiating automated processes.

RFID middleware must also be able to interface enterprise applications like Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Supply Chain Management (SCM), and Warehouse Management Systems (WMS). It connects the RFID readers to these applications in order to manage the flow of data.

Application-Specific RFID Software

RFID software is application-specific. RFID software is developed according to different applications. Common RFID software include:

  • RFID asset tracking software is designed to enable the tracking of assets. It allows companies to track the movement, status, and location of tagged assets. Based on the data fed into the RFID software, reports can be generated. The RFID software can also send alerts to employees.
  • RFID inventory management software helps companies monitor inventory levels. It is also used to control access to inventory. Companies using this software have real-time visibility into their inventories, and are able to automate stock counting and data analytics.
  • RFID anti-counterfeiting software is used as part of a counterfeit protection solution. This helps prevents the circulation of counterfeit products in supply chains.
  • RFID access control software enables the identification and authentication of RFID tags or RFID cards. It is also used to manage and control the access of vehicles or individuals to certain areas.

Companies may also choose to develop their own customized RFID software solutions.

Internet of Things (IoT) Software

RFID software is a sub-category of IoT software (Internet of Things software). Every IoT technology uses technology-specific software to connect physical devices to centralized back-end systems. IoT interfaces are components of IoT software that allow users to interact with and control their IoT devices. These interfaces can be web-based dashboards, mobile apps, or integrated control panels. There are many kinds of software for wireless devices.

Near-Field Communication (NFC) devices and applications also use software. Software for NFC enables short-range communication between NFC tags or NFC cards and NFC-enabled devices.

Machine vision software allows devices to interpret and understand visual data. Machine vision systems detect patterns, recognize objects, and make decisions based on visual input through the use of cameras and algorithms.

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software is used to convert different types of documents, such as scanned paper documents, PDF files, or images captured by a digital camera, into editable and searchable data.
