Security plates, vehicle identification and registration

TÖNNJES offers tailor-made solutions for vehicle identification that can be integrated into existing systems. As one of the world’s leading suppliers of security number plates and vehicle registration systems, the Tönnjes Group develops customised solutions that protect both vehicle registration and the subsequent identification of vehicles against tampering, forgery and theft – in direct collaboration with regulatory authorities and the traffic police via local production and sales companies.

Electronic vehicle identification via RFID, NFC and hybrid technology

TÖNNJES offers three complementary approaches to electronic vehicle identification:

• RAIN RFID (UHF) – fast identification with long range in high-traffic environments, including additional security standards such as UCODE DNA

• NFC – short-range verification via smartphone, ideal for roadside checks without special readers

• IDePLATE Hybrid – a new dual-frequency chip developed in collaboration with EM Microelectronic, combining RAIN RFID and NFC in a single tag with AES-128 authentication and extended memory structures; it is compatible with existing infrastructure and can be upgraded as requirements change

The hybrid chip can be integrated into the entire TÖNNJES product family – IDePLATE, IDeSTIX and the IDeSTIX headlight tag – thus forming a modular portfolio for secure vehicle registration worldwide.

DigSig technology – Secure. Verifiable. Trustworthy.

Beyond the hardware, TÖNNJES has developed a digital security layer based on DigSig technology. DigSigs are standardised digital signatures stored in barcodes and RFID tags, enabling tamper-proof verification of objects, documents and attributes – both online and offline. Based on asymmetric cryptography (ITU X.509) and specified by ISO/IEC 20248, the technology uses a private key for signing and a publicly certified key for verification via PKI – the same method trusted by banks and financial institutions. TÖNNJES already uses DigSigs worldwide throughout the entire lifecycle of vehicle number plates.

Building Identification System (BIS)

The same technology can be applied to buildings. BIS assigns each building a unique identification tag with an embedded RFID, NFC and/or QR code, thereby enabling authorised access to current and historical building data. The system supports effective disaster management, the control of illegal construction activity, efficient audits, and improved postal and infrastructure services.

IDeTrust – Digital Diploma and Certificate Verification

With IDeTrust, TÖNNJES brings its verification expertise to the education sector. The platform is based on the same ISO/IEC 20248 framework and enables educational institutions to issue forgery-proof digital diplomas and certificates with just a few clicks – without printing or postage. Each certificate contains a unique QR code for immediate, cross-border verification, even offline. IDeTrust supports customisable templates, multilingual formats, automated distribution and a central dashboard for tracking and reporting – making certification faster, more secure and completely paperless.
