TÖNNJES Invests in Bikekey and Takes Bike Registry to New Markets
TÖNNJES has taken a strategic stake in the Scandinavian technology company Bikekey. With the help of TÖNNJES’s international network of government agencies, the digital bicycle registry is to be expanded into new markets and established as a solution for proof of ownership, theft protection, and resale.
Digital Registry for Bicycles and E-Bikes
The TÖNNJES INTERNATIONAL GROUP has announced a strategic investment in Bikekey. The technology company operates a digital registration system for bicycles and e-bikes in Denmark and Norway. Together, the partners aim to expand the model internationally beyond Scandinavia.
According to its own figures, Bikekey already manages more than 100,000 registered bicycles. Users upload information such as the frame number, photos, and related documents to the platform. Each registered bicycle is also equipped with a weatherproof and tamper-proof QR code.
If a tagged bicycle is found, the QR code can be scanned with a smartphone. The finder can then anonymously contact the registered owner via the platform. Personal data is not disclosed in the process.
Documented Transfer of Ownership Hinders Illegal Trade
The platform does more than just handle initial registration. When a bicycle is sold, the transfer of ownership between verified accounts can be documented. This creates a traceable ownership history.
This digital proof is intended, in particular, to make it more difficult to resell stolen bicycles. At the same time, registration can support processes related to insurance, repairs, and the legal used bicycle trade.
In Scandinavia, Bikekey is already collaborating with bicycle associations, insurance companies, manufacturers, and specialty retailers. Among the participating organizations is the Danish bicycle association Cyklistforbundet.
TÖNNJES Brings Access to Government Agencies and International Markets
TÖNNJES complements Bikekey’s platform technology with its expertise in secure vehicle identification numbers as well as digital registration and identification solutions. According to the company, it has relationships with governments, ministries, and authorities in more than 100 countries.
This network is intended to support market entry in countries where vehicle registration and identification systems are organized by the government. Bikekey’s existing platform will be integrated with TÖNNJES’s production technology and international market access.
“This partnership fulfills a long-standing ambition of ours: to apply our expertise in vehicle identification to bicycles,” says Jörn Bertram, Managing Director of the TÖNNJES INTERNATIONAL GROUP. Bikekey has demonstrated in Scandinavia that the concept works. Now, the security standards are to be adapted to other markets and the requirements of the bicycle sector.
René Nørgård, CEO of Bikekey, sees the investment primarily as a way to gain access to government agencies and international markets. This will allow the model, which is already established in Scandinavia, to be expanded beyond its current areas of application.
Relevance for Cities, Insurers, and Micromobility
As the number of bicycles and e-bikes rises, so does the need for verifiable proof of ownership and digitally supported registration processes. In addition to private users, the model is therefore aimed at cities, insurance companies, manufacturers, retailers, and other players in the mobility industry.
A permanently assignable identifier can also be relevant for found or abandoned bicycles. Registered bicycles can be more easily returned to their owners rather than being disposed of or stored indefinitely.
For TÖNNJES, this investment expands its existing vehicle identification portfolio to include the micromobility sector. The companies see particular potential in countries with growing bicycle traffic and an increasingly digitized administrative and mobility infrastructure.
