How Bluetooth, 4G-LTE and AI Connect Global Tracking with Local Precision
Where are reusable transport containers, tools or industrial assets located? How long do they remain at a particular site? And how can companies identify logistics bottlenecks before they disrupt operations?
In his presentation, Martin Dobler, CEO of IoT Invent, explains how Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) combine global connectivity, local positioning and artificial intelligence to provide greater visibility into industrial supply chains.
His approach connects location tracking across countries with precise asset identification within warehouses, factories and logistics facilities.
Global Tracking Meets Local Positioning
Tracking assets across borders requires different technologies than locating equipment inside an industrial facility.
Dobler presents a combined architecture based on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), 4G-LTE and cloud software.
4G-LTE provides wide-area connectivity for tracking assets during transportation, while Bluetooth supports local identification and positioning. Together, these technologies connect long-distance asset movements with more detailed location information at individual facilities.
The system targets reusable transport assets such as containers, metal racks, stillages and other returnable equipment. Companies can monitor their movements, improve circulation and identify potential losses or unnecessary dwell times.
Smart Trackers for Industrial Logistics
IoT Invent presents several tracking devices designed for different industrial requirements.
The xTag LTE BLE combines mobile network connectivity with Bluetooth functionality for global tracking and local positioning.
The xAnchor+ LTE provides a Bluetooth access point with an integrated mobile connection, allowing nearby Bluetooth trackers to be detected and their data transmitted without depending on local network infrastructure.
The xTag BLE is designed for local tracking applications and supports modern Bluetooth positioning technologies, including Bluetooth Channel Sounding for improved distance measurement.
Depending on the application, these devices can support tracking across extensive logistics networks or more precise asset localization within industrial environments.
RTLS Cloud: From Location Data to Process Visibility
Collecting position data is only the first step. Companies also need to understand how assets move through operational processes.
Dobler introduces rtls cloud, IoT Invent's software platform for tracking, visualization and analysis.
The platform combines asset management, location histories and movement data with configurable rules and notifications. Users can examine where assets are located, reconstruct their movements and analyze how long they remain at specific locations.
This information supports better planning, more efficient asset utilization and greater transparency across logistics networks.
AI Identifies Patterns and Automates Logistics Processes
The presentation also introduces rtls cloud.ai, which extends conventional tracking with AI-supported process analysis.
Dobler describes a two-phase approach.
In the first phase, AI evaluates existing movement data to identify recurring routes and validate transport events. The objective is to recognize logistics processes without requiring every movement to be configured manually.
The second phase uses these recognized processes to support automated logistics workflows, including data exchange with business systems and the triggering of operational actions.
Illustrated applications include route analysis, pool management and the evaluation of asset movements across locations.
From Knowing Where to Knowing What Happens Next
The value of RTLS increases when tracking data can explain how logistics processes actually operate.
By combining global 4G-LTE connectivity, local Bluetooth positioning, cloud analytics and AI, industrial companies can move beyond basic asset localization toward process optimization and automation.
