RFID Canada Deploys RTLS Solution for Asset Management

UHF RFID readers from FEIG ELECTRONIC have been deployed by one of the largest rehabilitation hospitals in Canada as part of an UHF RTLS solution for asset management. The goal of this project, implemented by RFID Canada, was to optimize error-prone asset management and increase patient safety.

Track and Trace in the Hospital

At the West Park Health Center (WPHC) in Toronto, Canada, tracking devices in hospitals is part of risk and data management. It can be a matter of survival for a patient if a required device cannot be found immediately. Medical equipment such as endoscopes, ultrasound or dialysis machines, as well as patient beds must be available when required. The hospital needed a solution that enabled the seamless tracking, localization, and monitoring of medical equipment. In the summer of 2023, the WPHC deployed a passive UHF RTLS solution with readers from FEIG ELECTRONIC.

25,000 Assets Tracked in Real-Time

The entire UHF RTLS system was deployed in all five hospital wings that cover seven floors, on a total surface area of 730,000 sqm. The hardware involved includes 608 UHF RFID antennas, 120 UHF RFID readers, and 50 multiplexers from FEIG ELECTRONIC. These enable real-time asset management in every area of the building, regardless of how large the area is. This way, the inventory of all assets and consumables can be monitored, controlled, located and maintained. The all-encompassing software for the solution is the RFID Hub from RFID Canada. Multiple checkpoints per zone enable the directional recognition of a device or person in real time.

Advantages for WPHC

Hospitals are under great pressure to be efficient. The UHF RTLS solution not only allows acute search queries to be answered quickly, but above all, data analyses can also be carried out. The analyses of needs become more precise with analysis tools and AI. Simultaneously, investments can be optimized, and theft or losses are also minimized. The data thus helps the hospital to achieve end-to-end digitalization. As a result of the solution, process efficiency has increased, improving patient care.
