International recognition supports broader adoption of NFC-based charging

The NFC Forum has announced that two of its specifications — the NFC Wireless Charging (WLC) Specification and the NFC Data Exchange Format (NDEF) Technical Specification — have been formally adopted by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) as global standards.

The move marks an important step for the NFC ecosystem, giving additional weight to technologies already being used in millions of devices and strengthening the role of NFC in low-power wireless charging applications.

Milestone for interoperability and regulation

According to the NFC Forum, IEC adoption will help align its standards with regulatory initiatives such as the EU Common Charging Directive and the EU Digital Product Passport. It is also expected to support wider international deployment of NFC technologies by national and supranational organizations.

The standardization milestone is significant not only for NFC Forum members, but also for manufacturers, regulators, and product developers seeking greater interoperability and consistency across markets.

Focus on low-power wireless charging

The NFC WLC Specification is designed to standardize wireless charging for small battery-powered devices using the existing NFC communication interface. The Forum says the technology is already used in more than 100 million devices worldwide.

Typical use cases include wireless earbuds, smart glasses, digital stylus pens, headsets, fitness trackers, and similar consumer electronics.

NFC Forum also points out that the WLC specification is currently the only IEC-recognized standard tailored to the needs of low-power charging below 3W, making it particularly relevant for compact devices and smaller form factors.

Certification and product confidence

To support implementation, NFC Forum has established testing procedures and a dedicated wireless charging certification program. This is intended to help ensure that products conform to the WLC specification and deliver reliable interoperability, safety, and performance consistency.

For device makers, formal IEC recognition adds an extra layer of confidence that the technology is backed by an internationally recognized standards framework.

NDEF enables structured data exchange

The second specification adopted by the IEC, the NDEF Technical Specification, defines a common data format for NFC Forum-compliant devices and tags. It standardizes how data records are structured, exchanged, and interpreted.

Used together, the WLC and NDEF standards allow two devices to exchange the information needed to safely initiate and manage charging before power transfer begins.

Industry reaction

Mike McCamon, Executive Director of NFC Forum, said the decision gives companies greater confidence when building NFC technologies into future product plans.

“The formal adoption of the two specifications as IEC-recognized global standards brings confidence to businesses that are already using NFC Forum-compliant technologies or looking to implement them in future technology roadmaps,” he said.

He added that formal international standardization will help accelerate NFC wireless charging adoption, reduce market fragmentation, and improve reliability for smaller devices worldwide.

IEC review and next steps

According to the NFC Forum, both specifications passed through the IEC’s multi-stage review and voting process involving national committees from around the world.

Their adoption reflects international agreement that the specifications are technically robust, openly developed, testable, and supported by trusted governance processes.

Going forward, NFC Forum said it will continue liaising with the IEC to keep future updates to the WLC and NDEF specifications aligned with the newly recognized global standards.
