The Evolution of Semtech: 65+ Years of Innovation

At Think WIOT, we highlight companies driving real change in wireless IoT. Semtech stands out with over 65 years of continuous innovation—evolving from a semiconductor manufacturer into a global leader in connectivity, protection, sensing, and power solutions.
From Discrete Components to Protection Pioneer
Founded in 1960, Semtech began supplying discrete semiconductors for military and industrial use. By the 1970s, it identified the need to protect sensitive electronics, entering the Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) market and setting new standards for component protection.
Diversification and Connectivity Leadership
In the 1980s and 1990s, Semtech expanded into analog and mixed-signal ICs, power management, and interface solutions. The 2000s brought advanced TVS for high-speed interfaces like USB and HDMI.
A turning point came in 2012 with the acquisition of Cycleo, introducing LoRa® technology. This move transformed Semtech into a pioneer of low-power, wide-area networking (LPWAN), laying the groundwork for today's IoT ecosystems.
Building a Comprehensive IoT Portfolio
In the 2010s, Semtech helped standardize LoRaWAN®, supported the LoRa Alliance, and expanded into optical networking for data centers and 5G.
A major milestone was the 2022 acquisition of Sierra Wireless, adding industry-leading cellular IoT modules, gateways, and cloud services. This created a complete ecosystem spanning ultra-low-power LoRa to high-bandwidth cellular solutions.
A Commitment to Meaningful Innovation
Semtech’s six-decade journey is about connecting, protecting, and powering the modern world. Its technologies enable smart cities, sustainable agriculture, industrial automation, and more.
