Waste container identification is moving from manual field work to connected data capture. With the C9 RED RFID handheld, iDTRONIC offers municipal and private waste management companies a rugged Android device for container logging, assignment, replacement and billing-related processes directly on site.

RFID Identification at the Waste Container

Efficient waste management processes depend on reliable identification at the point of operation. With the C9 RED, iDTRONIC offers a rugged RFID handheld computer designed to support employees during daily field work around waste containers.

The device can be used to record containers during emptying processes, support precise logging and enable accurate billing. Further use cases include the registration of new waste containers, the replacement of damaged bins and the assignment of containers to new residents.

Rugged RFID Handheld C9 RED

The C9 RED combines rugged durability with advanced RFID and scanning technology for versatile industrial data capture.

LF RFID for Waste Management Applications

For the waste management industry, the C9 RED supports LF RFID at 134.2 kHz with FDX-B and HDX transponders. The device is compatible with ISO 11784 and ISO 11785, which are relevant standards for low-frequency RFID identification.

In daily use, the handheld is held underneath the RFID tag on the waste container. This enables fast and reliable identification in field environments. According to iDTRONIC, the system can also be combined with NFC technology, depending on the application requirements.

Rugged Mobile Device for Field Operations

The C9 RED is based on an industrial handheld computer with a 5.5-inch touchscreen and a resolution of 720 × 1440 pixels. Its IP65-rated housing is designed for demanding field applications where dust, moisture and mechanical stress can affect mobile equipment.

The device runs on Android 13 and is powered by a Cortex A53 2.0 GHz octa-core processor. It includes 4 GB RAM and 64 GB ROM. With a weight of 400 grams including battery and wrist strap, the handheld is designed for mobile work over longer periods. The stated operating time is up to eight hours.

Connectivity options include 4G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. These interfaces allow data communication between field staff, backend systems and operational software environments. Android 16 will be available from August 2026.

Additional Data Capture Functions

Beyond RFID identification, the C9 RED can be configured with different barcode modules. A 2D barcode imager can support inventory control, reporting and additional identification tasks.

The device also includes a 13-megapixel rear camera with autofocus and LED flash, as well as a 5-megapixel front camera. In waste management and maintenance scenarios, these camera functions can support damage documentation, container condition reporting or service records.

Configurations for Different RFID Requirements

The C9 RED product family is available in several RFID configurations. In addition to LF versions with 125 kHz or 134.2 kHz, the device can be configured for UHF RFID in the 865 to 868 MHz and 920 to 925 MHz ranges, HF/NFC at 13.56 MHz, NFC-only applications or LEGIC at 13.56 MHz.

For the waste management use case described here, the LF 134.2 kHz configuration is central. The combination of mobility, rugged design and wireless connectivity makes the C9 RED suitable for municipal and private waste management companies that need reliable container-level identification in the field.

Available Form Factors

The C9 RED is also available in additional form factors for different field and scanning requirements. Alongside the handheld version, iDTRONIC offers the GUN C9 RED as a gun reader and the GLOVE C9 RED as a wearable PDA reader. This allows companies to select the device format that best fits their operational workflows, scanning frequency and handling requirements.

Role in Digital Waste Management Processes

Container identification is a key step in digital waste management. When RFID data is captured directly during emptying, registration or replacement processes, operational records can become more precise and easier to integrate into billing, asset management and service workflows.

The C9 RED addresses this interface between physical waste containers and digital process documentation. By combining RFID reading, mobile computing, camera-based documentation and network connectivity in one device, iDTRONIC provides a handheld solution for field-based waste management operations.
