iDTRONIC: Rethinking Vehicle Access Control
With our new RFline UHF RFID reader series, we at iDTRONIC are reimagining automated access control: Vehicles can be detected as they approach, access permissions can be verified centrally, and barriers or gates can be controlled automatically.
Detecting Vehicles Before They Reach the Barrier
RFID-based access control has long been established. With our new RFline UHF RFID reader series, we are now creating a new hardware foundation to integrate vehicle recognition even more flexibly into modern access control and automation processes.
This means that access control doesn’t have to wait until a truck, company vehicle, or long-term parking permit holder is directly in front of the barrier. Identification can take place as the vehicle approaches.
A passive UHF RFID transponder on the vehicle is detected by the reader. The vehicle ID is then compared with the stored access permissions. If access is granted, the barrier, gate, or traffic light can be activated automatically.
Long-Range Detection with the RFline E4
Our RFline E4 UHF reader is particularly well-suited for longer reading distances. It achieves reading ranges of more than ten meters and operates in the European UHF band from 865 to 868 MHz.
An integrated antenna and three ports for external antennas allow the detection area to be specifically tailored to the traffic lane and access point.
The key factor here is not the greatest possible range, but rather reliably detecting the correct vehicle within a defined reading zone.
The RFline E4 is based on the Impinj E710 reader IC, features an IP67-rated metal housing, and supports, among other protocols, TCP/IP with PoE, RS232, and CANbus SAE J1939. This allows the reader to be integrated into existing IT and control infrastructures.
The new RFline series includes additional readers designed for various reading distances and detection scenarios. This allows the hardware to be selected to suit the specific access point.
Centrally Manage Access Permissions
Vehicle recognition is only the first step. What happens after the RFID read event is crucial.
With our Access Master Gate, RFID readers and multiple access points can be managed centrally via a browser-based application. Authorized vehicles can be added to a whitelist and granted permanent or temporary access.
For example, a company vehicle can be permanently authorized, while a supplier may only use a specific access point, or a service provider may be granted access only for a specified period of time.
The actual control logic does not have to reside in the reader installed outside. The Master Gate Controller can be installed securely within the infrastructure. This allows vehicle recognition and access decisions to be technically separated from one another.
The Right Transponder for Every Vehicle
Windshield labels, hang tags, and license plate tags are available for vehicle identification.
Depending on the application, the transponders can be personalized and equipped with an EPC or a visible ID. Tamper-proof windshield labels are affixed to the inside of the windshield and are destroyed upon removal. This allows access authorization to be more closely linked to the authorized vehicle.
The solution is particularly well-suited for factory premises, logistics centers, depots, corporate parking lots, and construction sites where many vehicles regularly pass through controlled access points.
