Zebra Technologies introduces FR55 mobile computer for first responders

Multimedia, security, and broadband capabilities in a rugged device for police, emergency services, and military
Zebra Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ: ZBRA), a global leader in solutions for digitizing and automating practical workflows, has introduced the new FR55 mobile computer.
The FR55 was developed specifically for use by emergency services, police, and military personnel and meets the growing demands of modern emergency, defense, and security organizations. The device celebrated its world premiere at Critical Communications World 2025 in Brussels.
Developed for the transition to broadband communications
With the FR55, Zebra is responding to the technological shift from digital narrowband standards such as TETRA to modern 3GPP-based mission-critical services (MCX) over broadband networks.
3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) is a global standardization committee that defines globally applicable mobile communications standards. Mission-critical services based on the 3GPP standard provide secure, highly available voice, video, and data communications tailored specifically to the needs of emergency responders. Among other things, they enable encrypted push-to-talk communications, live video streaming, and real-time data exchange—even in extremely critical situations.
The device supports 4G/LTE and 5G, enabling emergency services to gradually transition to future-proof broadband solutions without having to immediately replace existing systems.
Thanks to seamless MCX integration, the FR55 remains compatible with older technologies such as TETRA, DMR, and TETRAPOL.
A particular highlight is the direct integration of Agnet, Airbus's advanced solution for critical communications. This opens up new possibilities for encrypted voice and data communications, live video streaming, and location services.
"With the integration of Agnet in the FR55, first responders have access to secure, broadband-based communications at the touch of a button – a decisive advantage for situational awareness and team coordination," explains Mika Laitinen, Head of Portfolio Management for Public Safety and Security at Airbus.
State-of-the-art technology for critical missions
The FR55 offers impressive connectivity and high computing power:
Second-generation 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth v5.3 for stable, secure networks
eMBMS support, ideal for high-traffic locations such as stadiums or transportation hubs
Emergencycall button for immediate alerting in case of an emergency
Powerful Qualcomm® processor for AI and AR applications
Support up to Android 18 for maximum future-proofing
"We developed the FR55 specifically for the current challenges faced by emergency responders," emphasizes Oliver Ledgard, Public Safety Strategy Director EMEA at Zebra Technologies. "The device enables secure multimedia communication and comprehensive data capture – even in complex deployment scenarios."
Voices from the industry
"The combination of fast 5G data connectivity and high computing power is essential to provide optimal support to police, fire, and emergency services,"
says Ken Rehbehn, Principal Analyst at CritComm Insights. "The FR55 sets new standards in this area."
