Robust Inductive Angle Sensors for Mobile Equipment

Turck’s QR20 inductive angle sensors with SAE J1939 and Deutsch connectors deliver reliable, contactless angle measurement for mobile machinery
Turck has expanded its QR20 encoder family with new variants equipped with factory-overmolded Deutsch connectors. This robust connection, combined with the contactless inductive measuring principle, ensures consistent IP68/IP69K protection from the sensor body all the way through to the interface.
This makes the QR20 ideally suited for use on mobile machinery that operates in harsh environments, where shocks, vibration, and tensile loads on cabling are the norm.
Thanks to their fully encapsulated electronics and the absence of mechanical coupling components such as gears or shafts, the inductive QR20 sensors deliver non-contact, wear-free measurement of rotational angles.
They operate by detecting the position of an integrated positioning element via inductive coupling—offering exceptional durability even in demanding conditions like mud, dust, and high-pressure washdowns.
Installation is also simplified: the rugged design eliminates the need for additional protective housings or complex strain relief systems. This saves users time and reduces installation costs.
Turck’s new QR20 variant with an SAE J1939 interface can be seamlessly integrated into standardized network architectures in mobile equipment. For other needs, a model with analog voltage output is available.
The analog version supports rapid commissioning by offering not just a 360° full range but also seven preconfigured angle ranges from ±10° to ±120°. For applications requiring only part of the measurement range, sensor resolution can be maximized accordingly.
Typical applications for the QR20 angle sensors include measuring the position of lifting arms, pantographs, snow plows, combine harvesters, and other lifting or steering components on commercial vehicles, agricultural equipment, and construction machinery.

Practical Application: Angle Measurement on Field Sprayers
Reliable angle detection is critical for agricultural machinery such as field sprayers. When applying crop protection agents, spray arms must maintain precise angles to ensure even coverage.
To allow dynamic, trouble-free folding and unfolding of the booms, angle sensors continuously measure the opening angles. Because spraying can only be done during a limited weather window, maximum machine availability is essential.
Turck’s contactless QR20 rotary encoders increase system reliability thanks to their wear-free design and high resistance to shock and vibration. Their extremely compact, magnet-free inductive sensing principle allows installation even within confined steel structures such as steering axles or articulated arms.

Key Benefits:
Contactless, wear-free, and fail-safe position detection of the sprayer boom
Extremely compact housing and magnet-free inductive design for easy integration in tight steel constructions
High electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) ensures reliable, interference-free operation even in demanding environments
Resistance to conducted interference (load dump), salt spray, rapid temperature fluctuations, diesel, and kerosene exposure
Thanks to their IP68/IP69K protection, QR20 encoders can also be mounted inside metal housings, supporting controlled and precise steering maneuvers in the field. Turck’s QR20 angle sensor reflects many years of industry experience and close cooperation with leading agricultural machinery manufacturers.
