Pragmatic Semiconductor has introduced NFC Protect PR1311, a flexible NFC chip that combines item-level authentication with tamper detection. The product addresses retail, healthcare and industrial applications where package integrity, counterfeit prevention and traceability are relevant.

NFC verification of authenticity and seal integrity

NFC Protect PR1311 creates a unique digital product identity and records whether a product or package has been tampered with. A tap with an NFC-enabled smartphone enables consumers, retailers and brands to verify both authenticity and tamper status without dedicated reader hardware.

Each chip is assigned a unique serial number during manufacturing and permanently locked. Together with the tamper status, this supports identification and status verification across the product lifecycle, from production and distribution to point of sale and end use.

Flexible integration into products and packaging

The chip uses Pragmatic Semiconductor’s flexible semiconductor technology and can be integrated into packaging and products, including curved surfaces. Its thin construction is designed to remain imperceptible to the touch while preserving packaging design and consumer handling.

Target applications include wine and spirits, pharmaceuticals, wellness products, cosmetics, industrial goods, baby food and pet food. In these sectors, tamper evidence can support consumer protection, product integrity and supply-chain control.

Item-level intelligence for connected packaging

NFC Protect PR1311 combines NFC identification, sensing and digital interaction in one component. Beyond initial authentication, the NFC interface can support contextual digital content and interactions based on the product’s current tamper status.

For system integrators, RFID and NFC label suppliers, and packaging converters, the technology can support digital first-opening indication and connected packaging concepts. Standard smartphones provide the verification interface, reducing the need for separate inspection equipment at the consumer level.

Early access programme begins

An early-access programme now enables customers to source NFC Protect PR1311 through selected assembly partners.

The chip is manufactured using Pragmatic Semiconductor’s low-carbon production approach and is positioned for high-volume, cost-sensitive item-level use cases.
