Lacuna Space Opens LoneWhisper Satellite IoT Technology to Global Partners
Satellite IoT provider Lacuna Space is opening its LoneWhisper® Direct-to-Device (D2D) satellite IoT technology to global partners. Operators and national organizations can deploy Lacuna’s gateway payloads on their own satellites and connect to a shared network designed for low-power IoT connectivity worldwide.
Direct-to-Device IoT Beyond Terrestrial Coverage
LoneWhisper® enables standard LoRa®-enabled IoT devices to transmit data directly to satellites from virtually anywhere on Earth, without requiring terrestrial cellular coverage.
This capability supports a wide range of applications in sectors such as agriculture, environmental monitoring, logistics, maritime operations, and remote infrastructure, where reliable connectivity is often difficult to achieve.
What LoneWhisper® Technology Combines
Developed over nearly ten years and supported by approximately €20 million in investment, the LoneWhisper® platform combines flight-proven satellite payloads, advanced almanac provisioning, and a global ground-based message broker that routes data between IoT devices and cloud applications.
The architecture allows messages to be transmitted through whichever partner satellite is available, ensuring consistent communication even in remote regions.
A Federated Model for Faster Deployment
Unlike traditional satellite constellations that require significant upfront investment and long development cycles, Lacuna’s model enables partners to integrate into an existing operational network. By hosting LoneWhisper® gateway payloads on their own spacecraft, operators can expand coverage collaboratively while reducing technological risk and accelerating time to market.
Each additional satellite enhances global connectivity for all participants. The federated network approach allows partners to extend the reach of their IoT services in a way comparable to roaming agreements between mobile network operators.
Operational Technology with Proven Use
The Lacuna Network is already operational and delivering results. With multiple successful payload launches and more than four million messages delivered, the network is supporting IoT applications in agriculture, environmental monitoring, logistics, and infrastructure monitoring.
“This is how we fast-track the future of direct-to-device connectivity, through partnership and shared capability,” said Rob Spurrett, CEO of Lacuna Space. “By hosting our LoneWhisper® gateway payloads on their own spacecraft, partners can immediately integrate into a mature global network built specifically for low-power IoT services.”
Built on Open Standards
The system is based on open LoRaWAN® standards, ensuring interoperability between devices and networks while supporting the growth of a global satellite IoT ecosystem. By opening its technology to collaborators, Lacuna Space aims to accelerate the deployment of satellite IoT services and extend connectivity to regions where terrestrial networks remain unavailable.
Through this approach, LoneWhisper® is designed to transform Direct-to-Device satellite IoT from a specialized technology into scalable global infrastructure capable of supporting billions of connected devices.
