Swiss battery innovator BTRY and US-based InsightSilica are collaborating to develop ultra-thin, heat-resistant solid-state batteries designed for the demanding conditions of semiconductor manufacturing.

As semiconductor manufacturing advances, the demand for increasingly compact, reliable and temperature-resistant components continues to grow. BTRY and InsightSilica have announced a collaboration to adapt and validate solid-state battery technology for use in semiconductor manufacturing environments.

The partnership combines BTRY's expertise in ultra-thin solid-state batteries with InsightSilica's experience in semiconductor metrology and process control. Together, the companies aim to develop battery solutions that address the industry's demanding requirements for space, temperature resistance and reliability.

Ultra-Thin Batteries for Extreme Manufacturing Conditions

Conventional batteries face significant limitations in semiconductor manufacturing environments. Installation space can be extremely restricted, while elevated temperatures and aggressive process conditions place considerable demands on battery materials and design.

BTRY's thin-film solid-state technology offers an alternative. Its batteries are less than 1 mm thick, contain no flammable liquid electrolyte and can operate at temperatures of up to 150°C.

Their compact design opens opportunities for battery integration in semiconductor equipment and components where space is severely constrained. The absence of flammable liquid electrolytes also addresses an important material-related concern in demanding operating environments.

Combining Battery Innovation with Semiconductor Expertise

The collaboration focuses on adapting BTRY's existing battery technology to the specific requirements of semiconductor manufacturing and validating its performance under relevant operating conditions.

InsightSilica contributes its expertise in advanced metrology and process-control solutions, which enable semiconductor manufacturers to monitor critical process parameters, improve production efficiency and increase yields.

BTRY brings thin-film battery technology developed using a scalable, solvent-free manufacturing process based on established semiconductor production methods. This manufacturing approach provides a technological connection between battery production and the semiconductor industry.

By combining their respective capabilities, the partners intend to explore how ultra-thin solid-state batteries can meet the demanding performance and integration requirements of next-generation semiconductor applications.
