Batteryless RAIN RFID Sensor IC for Mass IoT Deployment
The em|aura-sense is a RAIN RFID sensor IC that enables large-scale rollouts of cost-effective, batteryless sensors for ubiquitous IoT applications. It combines long-range RAIN RFID (UHF) technology with capacitive sensing, allowing both identification and sensing through a single, standard-compliant tag.
The capacitive sensor element is external to the chip and can be implemented flexibly – either integrated directly into the inlay (e.g. as a printed or etched structure) or mounted as a separate SMD component. This makes em|aura-sense ideal for customized sensor designs tailored to specific materials, environments or form factors.
em|aura-sense supports several data acquisition modes, fully compliant with ISO/IEC 18000-63 and EPC Gen2v2 snapshot sensor definitions. Sensor data can be retrieved directly during inventory for highly efficient system operation, or – on reader request – stored in the IC’s user memory for later read-out and logging.
A built-in tamper evidence function can be used either together with the capacitive sensor or as a simple 1-bit resistive sensor, enabling low-cost tamper-evident labels and sealed packaging concepts.
Key Features
Standard RAIN RFID protocol (ISO/IEC 18000-63) – no custom reader commands required
Snapshot Sensor technology – enables sensing without changes to existing RAIN RFID infrastructure
Capacitive sensing with 7-bit resolution and ≈17 pF effective range plus offset calibration
Measurement values can be stored inside the IC (user memory up to 2 kbit)
Excellent RF performance: –19.5 dBm read sensitivity / –18 dBm sensing sensitivity
Tamper function usable as a 1-bit resistive sensor for seal or label tamper evidence
UHF front-end compatible with em|echo-V and em|aura-light – antenna designs can be reused
Typical Applications
Smart manufacturing and factory automation
Industry 4.0 asset and condition monitoring
Industrial sensing on non-powered or hard-to-access assets
Quick Service Restaurants (QSR) – e.g. packaging, freshness or process monitoring
