Truvami Brings Transparency to Construction Traffic in Zermatt

Live location data and geofencing enable a comparison between planned, approved, and actual trips made by construction vehicles.

Zermatt, Switzerland, July 2026 – Coordinating construction activities in one of Switzerland’s most famous car-free municipalities requires careful planning. To support traffic management during the designated construction phases, Truvami collaborated with the municipality of Zermatt. An IoT-based solution tracked the movements of authorized construction vehicles and provided the municipality with real-time location and movement data.

Time-Limited Access for Construction Vehicles

Zermatt restricts motorized traffic for most of the year. To ensure that necessary construction and infrastructure projects can still be carried out, the municipality opens the otherwise traffic-free zone twice a year during defined construction phases for authorized construction vehicles.

Each participating company submitted a logistics plan to the municipality in advance, including an estimate of the required trips. After signing an agreement, each authorized vehicle received a travel permit and a Truvami Tag XL tracker.

The rugged IoT tracker is designed for machinery, construction vehicles, and other mobile assets operating in demanding outdoor environments. Its long battery life enables continuous operation with minimal maintenance. The devices recorded vehicle positions at regular intervals and transmitted the data to the Truvami platform via LoRaWAN. Depending on the deployment environment, Truvami’s tracker portfolio supports various positioning technologies, including GNSS, Bluetooth Low Energy, and Wi-Fi-based positioning.

The tracking solution added an operational data layer to the existing approval process. This made it possible to compare the planned and approved trips with the transports that were actually carried out.

Live Location Data and Digital Zones

The registered construction vehicles transmitted their location data to the Truvami platform at regular intervals. There, digital zones—known as geofences—were set up for access to Zermatt as well as for various construction sites and landfills.

By combining location data with geofencing, the municipality was able to automatically track when vehicles entered the no-entry zone and when they reached specific construction sites or landfills.

This made it possible to document traffic movements and, among other things, evaluate the traffic volume on individual road sections. The collected data provided a reliable basis for analyzing traffic flows and verifying compliance with the established access regulations.

Data Foundation for Future Construction Phases

“Managing access permissions is only part of the task,” says Chiara Koopmans, General Manager of Truvami. “Operational data enables municipalities to document what actually happened in a traceable manner, compare planned and actual movements, and use this information to make informed decisions for future construction phases.”

The project demonstrates how Industrial IoT can support municipalities in challenging operational tasks without fundamentally changing existing workflows. Instead of relying solely on manual documentation or retrospective evaluations, authorities receive continuously available operational data for traffic planning, verifying guidelines, and analyzing actual vehicle movements.

The participating companies can also benefit from the insights gained. The data helps them more accurately assess the actual effort involved and the required routes, and calculate future logistics and project proposals based on a more solid data foundation.
