STRATUM 9 Launches DECT NR+ Gateway for Mobile Real-Time Industrial Applications
The industrial-grade gateway enables deterministic wireless communication for moving machines and automation systems, combining transparent PROFINET/PROFIsafe transmission with seamless handover between base stations.
Kufstein, Austria – STRATUM 9 GmbH has recently introduced an industrial-grade DECT NR+ Gateway for mobile real-time applications in manufacturing, intralogistics, robotics and conveyor technology. The gateway enables deterministic, low-latency wireless communication for moving industrial systems while connecting DECT NR+ networks to existing Ethernet infrastructure.
Combining scheduled radio access, transparent transmission of industrial protocols and seamless handover between base stations, the gateway maintains predictable communication times as machines and transport systems move between wireless coverage areas.
Deterministic Wireless Communication with DECT NR+
DECT NR+ is an ETSI-standardized, non-cellular 5G technology designed for private wireless networks. STRATUM 9 uses a Scheduled Access MAC layer that assigns dedicated transmission time slots to connected devices, reducing collisions and enabling predictable latency even when multiple participants operate simultaneously.
Operating in the 1.9 GHz frequency band, the gateway also avoids interference from many conventional 2.4 GHz wireless systems.
“By making DECT NR+ accessible for industrial use, we are overcoming fundamental limitations of wireless communication in industrial environments,” says Alfred della Torre Jr., Co-Founder and Managing Director of STRATUM 9.
Three Key Capabilities for Mobile Industrial Applications
Deterministic communication: Scheduled wireless access enables predictable transmission intervals for moving machinery, synchronized processes and applications requiring time-critical control communication.
Transparent PROFINET and PROFIsafe transmission: The gateway transfers industrial communication protocols without modification or protocol conversion. Existing PLC-based automation architectures can therefore incorporate wireless connections without fundamentally changing their communication structures. Safety-related applications remain subject to the required system-level validation.
Seamless handover: Mobile participants can move between DECT NR+ base stations while maintaining communication. This is particularly relevant for automated guided vehicles (AGVs), electric monorail systems, mobile robots and other continuously moving equipment.
The same hardware can operate as a stationary base station or mobile wireless participant, with Ethernet and CAN interfaces and industrial M12 connectors. This simplifies integration into existing automation systems. The gateway can also support less time-critical IoT applications, including sensor networks.
Industrial Applications with DETO Automation and ROFA Group
STRATUM 9's DECT NR+ technology is being integrated into industrial applications through its collaboration with DETO Automation, a manufacturer of intelligent automation components for moving systems, and the ROFA Group, a specialist in conveyor technology, system integration and industrial material handling.
DETO Automation and ROFA Group are developing wireless communication solutions for intralogistics and electric monorail systems. The technology enables reliable communication between stationary control systems and moving transport equipment. Transparent PROFINET transmission is particularly valuable for retrofitting existing installations without major changes to established automation architectures.
“The demand for retrofits in existing facilities is high, as is the requirement to implement them during ongoing operations without downtime. This is exactly what we can now offer our customers through the transparent PROFINET transmission developed by STRATUM 9,” says Martin Wolf, Managing Director of DETO Automation Germany.
Available for Industrial Integration and OEM Development
The DECT NR+ Gateway is available from STRATUM 9 for evaluation, integration and industrial deployment. The company also offers a licensable DECT NR+ Software Stack, a Starter Kit for prototyping and development services covering customized hardware, firmware and IoT system integration.
The gateway provides machine builders and automation specialists with an alternative to wired industrial communication wherever mobility, predictable transmission times and compatibility with existing infrastructure are essential.
