Seamless integration of RFID systems with MQTT and REST API

Balluff, a specialist in industrial automation solutions, offers powerful devices in the form of BIS V IIoT RFID evaluation units, which enable the direct integration of RFID solutions into the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). They make production facilities fit for the digital future and ensure maximum transparency and efficiency on the shop floor.

The BIS V IIoT series optimizes production processes, reduces costs, and increases competitiveness by quickly and reliably integrating collected data into higher-level IT systems such as MES or ERP.

Networking at the IIoT level

The evaluation units transfer data directly to the company's IT systems via standardized communication protocols such as MQTT and REST API. This creates cross-machine data flows that range from the visualization of process results to the automated generation of recommendations for action.

"Our BIS V IIoT devices are the key to flexible, future-proof production," explains Rainer Traub, Product Cluster Manager Identification at Balluff. "Thanks to standardized interfaces, they can be easily integrated into existing systems and offer maximum investment security."

Maximum flexibility: LF, HF, and UHF RFID

A key feature of the BIS V IIoT series is its multi-frequency capability.
All common RFID technologies – LF, HF, and UHF – can be operated with just one evaluation unit. Read/write heads can be connected to up to four RFID ports, regardless of frequency. Additional IO-Link devices can be integrated via the integrated IO-Link master port.

Another highlight is the "formatted reading" feature, which automatically converts binary data into the desired format. This minimizes sources of error and eliminates the need for manual reformatting or additional software.

Easy operation and UHF tools

Parameterization is intuitive via a web user interface or the REST API. Additional tools are available for UHF applications, such as:

  • Loop filter for data preprocessing

  • PowerScan for support during commissioning

Compact, robust, and future-proof

The devices are available with either M12 power or 7/8" connector concepts and comply with the IEC 61076-2-111 standard. Thanks to their compact design, they are ideal for use in modern smart factories where space, flexibility, and safety are crucial.

Advantages at a glance

  • All RFID technologies (LF, HF, UHF) in one unit

  • Standardized protocols such as MQTT and REST API for IT integration

  • Formatted data output without additional software

  • UHF tools for simplified commissioning

  • Fast parameterization via web interface

  • Robust design, choice of M12 power or 7/8"

RFID and IIoT for the smart factory

With the BIS V IIoT evaluation units, Balluff combines classic RFID systems with the requirements of Industry 4.0. Companies receive a solution that enables them to digitize production processes, accelerate workflows, and create transparent, scalable structures for the smart factory of the future.
