Scottsdale (AZ), USA / Berlin, Germany, August 19, 2025 – The Catena-X Automotive Network e.V. and the OPC Foundation have announced a strategic collaboration to accelerate standardized, cross-company data sharing across the manufacturing industry.

The partnership directly supports the upcoming EU regulation requiring a Digital Product Passport (DPP) by 2027, ensuring trusted, machine-readable product data across value chains.

Two Strong Ecosystems Join Forces

  • Catena-X is the first open, collaborative data space for the automotive industry, enabling sovereign and standardized data exchange through interoperable infrastructure and semantic templates.

  • OPC Foundation, with more than 1,000 members worldwide, is the leading organization for industrial interoperability and the creator of OPC UA, the globally recognized standard for secure and semantically enriched information exchange.

By aligning OPC UA’s proven industrial modelling capabilities with Catena-X’s governance framework and cloud-based infrastructure, both organizations aim to simplify data integration, reduce reporting errors, and improve compliance with new regulations such as the DPP.

Four Core Areas of Cooperation

  1. Semantic Integration – Combining OPC UA information modelling with Catena-X semantic templates to create a comprehensive library of interoperable, machine-readable models.

  2. Open-Source Reference Implementations – Developing and providing open-source interoperability components for easy integration of OPC UA systems into Catena-X.

  3. Reference Architecture Alignment – Aligning OPC Foundation’s Cloud Initiative with Catena-X’s dataspace architecture to streamline deployments from shopfloor to supply chain.

  4. Industrial Ecosystem Enablement – Helping companies leverage existing OPC UA tools to meet regulatory requirements like the DPP, while reducing integration costs and accelerating time-to-compliance.

Statements from Leadership

Oliver Ganser, Chairman of the Board at Catena-X, stated:
“The OPC Foundation provides secure, standardized information – an essential foundation for digital transformation. Linking this data to the Catena-X ecosystem turns standardized information into cross-company value. This collaboration is a key step toward end-to-end data chains and cross-industry solutions like the Digital Product Passport.”

Stefan Hoppe, President and Executive Director of the OPC Foundation, added:
“This collaboration brings together two strong ecosystems: OPC UA as a globally accepted standard, and Catena-X as a pioneering data-space initiative. Together, we provide companies with a practical bridge from the shopfloor to the cloud and a robust foundation for sustainable digitalization.”
