Wi-Fi HaLow Comes to Zephyr: Morse Micro Simplifies Embedded IoT Development
Morse Micro has joined the Zephyr Project and is making its Wi-Fi HaLow software accessible to one of the most widely used open-source real-time operating systems for embedded devices. The move is designed to reduce integration effort, improve portability across hardware platforms and accelerate the path from prototype to production for Wi-Fi HaLow-based IoT products.
Wi-Fi HaLow adoption depends on more than radio performance. For embedded product teams, software integration, driver availability and portability across hardware architectures are also essential for moving from evaluation to commercial products.
By supporting Zephyr, Morse Micro is bringing its Wi-Fi HaLow drivers and sample applications into an environment many embedded developers already use, instead of requiring teams to build and maintain a separate integration for every design.
What Is the Zephyr Project?
The Zephyr Project is an open-source real-time operating system, or RTOS, for embedded and connected devices.
An RTOS is optimized for predictable timing, low resource consumption and close interaction with hardware. Typical applications include sensors, industrial controllers, medical electronics, wearables and smart devices.
Zephyr is hardware-agnostic by design, allowing applications to move across supported processor architectures and boards with comparatively little rework.
For Wi-Fi HaLow, that means developers can integrate long-range, low-power connectivity within an established embedded-software environment rather than treating it as a separate specialist project.
Wi-Fi HaLow Becomes Easier to Integrate
Wi-Fi HaLow is based on IEEE 802.11ah and is designed for longer range and lower power consumption than conventional Wi-Fi.
Morse Micro’s Zephyr support gives developers access to existing drivers and sample applications for faster bring-up on supported hardware. Software can also be moved more easily across architectures already supported by Zephyr.
That can reduce the engineering effort needed to port, integrate and maintain the Wi-Fi HaLow software stack across different product designs.
From Wireless Technology to Product Development
The Zephyr integration is part of a broader commercialization push around Wi-Fi HaLow.
In September 2026, Morse Micro also launched Wi-Fi HaLow USB network adapters for developers and named Byte Lab as its first European Wi-Fi HaLow design partner.
Together, these developments address different parts of the product-development process: evaluation hardware, embedded software and local design support.
Morse Micro will also participate in the Zephyr Developer Summit in Prague from October 7 to 9, 2026, held alongside Open Source Summit Europe.
For Wi-Fi HaLow, the move into Zephyr is therefore less about a new radio feature and more about making the technology easier to build into real embedded products.
