Idyllic cuts RF Barcode reader costs and boosts chipless RFID adoption
RF Barcode® combines barcode-like simplicity with RFID-style, non-line-of-sight reading using chipless tags designed for scalable packaging and traceability.
Idyllic Technology, a France-based developer of chipless identification solutions, has announced a major cost reduction for its RF Barcode® reader hardware. The company says reader pricing is now in line with conventional RFID readers, lowering adoption barriers for high-volume use cases in retail, logistics, manufacturing, and packaging. Exact pricing was not disclosed.
RF Barcode® (Radio Frequency Barcode) is Idyllic’s patented chipless RFID approach. Instead of relying on a silicon chip, the identification is based on a tag design intended for low-cost, high-volume deployment, with the goal of enabling automated identification in packaging-centric applications. Idyllic states that its RF Barcode® readers maintain high read speeds, strong reliability, and bulk scanning capability after the cost optimization.
Chipless RFID functionality: what RF Barcode® enables
Chipless RFID targets scenarios where optical codes can be limiting and conventional RFID may be too costly at massive scale. Compared with barcodes and QR codes, chipless RF identification aims to reduce the dependency on line-of-sight and manual orientation. Compared with classic RFID, it removes the IC, which can improve economics and may support broader adoption in item-level packaging and high-volume track-and-trace.
Think WIoT has previously outlined chipless RFID as a relevant route for smart packaging and mass adoption where cost and operational scalability are decisive.
By bringing reader costs to parity with conventional RFID readers, Idyllic is positioning RF Barcode® as easier to evaluate and deploy within real-world budgets, particularly where the total system cost is driven by infrastructure plus very large tag volumes.
