DACHSER makes its specially developed retail boxes visible in real time in its general cargo network: to track the high-quality reusable load carriers, the logistics service provider relies on web-based software from Logistikbude, connected via NB-IoT trackers that transmit status and location data via the mobile network.

The information is collated in the central live cockpit, supporting monitoring, control, and transparency for branches and customers.

NB-IoT brings retail boxes into the live cockpit

The Retail Box is a robust, lockable roll container for sensitive goods (including fashion, lifestyle, cosmetics, electronics) and part of a sustainable reusable system. To ensure that the containers remain in the value-added cycle and deviations are detected early, a reliable, comprehensive connection is required, this is exactly where DACHSER relies on NB-IoT.

The NB-IoT trackers attached to the retail boxes record and transmit:

  • Boxstatus data (e.g., events/updates from the tracking system)

  • Location information via the mobile network

  • Shipment and geometry data for real-time availability in the dashboard

This means that information is available regardless of location, without local gateways or dedicated radio infrastructure at each transfer point. In addition, live scan information is fed in, which DACHSER drivers record using MDE scanners. Together, this creates a reliable data basis for the precise control of the boxes.

Real-time transparency – less administrative effort

Before the introduction of the system, load carrier management was fragmented: data was scattered and inventory reconciliation was time-consuming. With Logistikbude's Live Cockpit, tracking and scan data are automatically merged. This reduces manual effort, minimizes sources of error, and speeds up decisions—for example, in the event of delays due to traffic jams or route changes.

Uwe Riechel, Department Head at DACHSER Fashion Logistics:
"With the web-based dashboard, we can track where our roll containers are at any time, and also how long they have been there. All important information can be accessed at any time, regardless of location and by all administrative staff."

Why NB-IoT? A mobile communications standard for scalable IoT logistics

NB-IoT is particularly attractive for tracking load carriers in widely distributed networks: The technology uses existing mobile networks, is designed for energy-efficient IoT communication, and enables scalable connection of many assets, ideal when load carriers are in circulation across multiple locations.

Michael Koscharnyj, co-founder and COO of Logistikbude:
"Both sides worked closely together, contributed their expertise, and were also able to gain valuable insights for the future."
