FEIG Electronic Launches a New Era of eMobility Payments

What to expect

Since 2024, FEIG Electronic has held a significant stake in ev-pay GmbH – a platform for ad-hoc payment solutions at EV charging stations. The goal of the joint venture: to merge FEIG’s cVEND terminals with ev-pay’s cloud-based software into a fully integrated payment solution.

The system meets all the requirements of the AFIR regulation and German calibration law – and enables secure card payments at EV charging stations, without requiring manufacturers or operators to handle integrations, updates, or certifications themselves.

Interview with Frank Edunjobi

1. What new era is FEIG ushering in with the new payment products launching in 2025?

Frank Edunjobi: With our new payment solutions, we’re opening a new chapter in electromobility. Payment has long been an unresolved issue when it comes to EV charging stations. Manufacturers and operators didn’t see it as their responsibility – too complex, too time-consuming, too far from their core business. While our payment systems are already well established in areas like public transport, parking, or vending, traditional solutions repeatedly hit limits at charging stations.

This is exactly where we step in – with one clear goal: making payment finally simple.

We developed a fully cloud-based plug-and-play solution that not only convinces technically, but also radically reduces the effort around integration, updates, and operations. Together with the startup ev-pay, we created a joint venture that reduces the integration effort from several months to just a few hours – ideally, the entire setup can be completed in a single morning.

This is nothing less than a quantum leap for the industry – and perhaps the crucial spark needed to finally establish card payments at charging stations across the board.

2. Why is this solution so important for charging station operators?

Frank Edunjobi: In the past, charging station manufacturers had to integrate our terminals using a standardized payment protocol (ZV protocol, for example). This protocol is used thousands of times by cash register and vending machine manufacturers – and it works flawlessly there. But in e-mobility, things are different.

Many manufacturers find the integration too complex – especially regarding maintenance, software updates, and legal requirements. Our new solution takes exactly this burden off their shoulders.

We centrally handle updates, certifications, and all testing. The operator simply receives a message: “An update is available – these are the new features.” Responsibility remains with us. In doing so, we reduce the workload on the manufacturer and operator side by around 99%. That’s a huge difference.

3. So the system is now fully available?

Frank Edunjobi: Yes, the system is fully ready for use. The final hurdle was the legal certification in accordance with German calibration law. We received the so-called type examination certificate in May 2025. This means we meet not only the technical requirements but also the regulatory ones. We’re seeing strong interest – the market gap is obvious.

4. So in summary: The solution enables ad-hoc payment at any charging station – compliant and without complex integration?

Frank Edunjobi: Exactly. Operators can offer debit and credit card payments at any charging station – quickly, securely, and in compliance with calibration law. And: the entry barrier has been radically lowered. The complexity that previously kept many manufacturers away from the topic of payment is now a thing of the past.

5. That means your company now expects strong uptake – and the new solution will be broadly adopted in the EV charging industry?

Frank Edunjobi: Absolutely. We’ve been in close contact with a wide range of manufacturers and operators for over a year. Many pilot projects are in preparation, and contract negotiations are already underway – of course, there are still many details to clarify. But interest is high, and feedback from trade fairs – most recently in Gothenburg – confirms it: anyone seriously looking into payment recognizes the value of our solution immediately.

About the cVEND Series

The new cVEND payment terminals from FEIG ELECTRONIC are specifically designed for use at charging stations and other outdoor systems. Their compact, robust design with vandal-resistant housing (IK10) and weatherproof construction makes them ideal for demanding environments like parking lots, fuel stations, or EV charging infrastructure.

Depending on the model, the terminals feature either a high-contrast color or OLED display and an optional stainless steel PIN pad with backlit keys for maximum user convenience.

Contactless payment via NFC is standard on all models and enables quick transactions via credit card, Girocard, Apple Pay, or Google Pay – without physical contact.

Integration and Flexibility

Particular emphasis has been placed on ease of integration and flexibility: The terminals support various interfaces such as MDB, USB, RS-232, or LAN/LTE and can be mounted either on the surface or flush, depending on the installation scenario. This makes them suitable for both new installations and retrofits of existing infrastructure.

The combination of modern hardware, intuitive user interface, and cloud-based backend makes the cVEND series an ideal solution for operators looking for a reliable, legally compliant, and future-proof payment system for EV charging stations.
