Pepperl+Fuchs has expanded its IDENTControl Compact family with the new IDENTControl Compact B40 RFID evaluation unit. The device connects up to two RFID read/write heads with PLC, IT and IIoT systems, supports LF, HF and UHF RFID, and meets the requirements of the EU Cyber Resilience Act.

The B40 therefore addresses three key requirements in industrial RFID projects: traceability, OT-IT integration and long-term cybersecurity.

New RFID Evaluation Unit for Industrial Identification

The IDENTControl Compact B40, product designation IC-KP2-2HB40-2V1D, is a new compact RFID evaluation unit for industrial identification processes. It is designed for the connection of up to two RFID read/write heads and can be used across frequencies with LF, HF and UHF RFID systems.

An RFID evaluation unit forms the interface between the RFID read/write heads in the field and higher-level systems. It receives and processes RFID data, controls the connected read/write heads and transfers the information to a PLC, an IT system or an IIoT application.

IDENTControl Compact B40 RFID Evaluation Unit

The IDENTControl Compact B40 RFID unit offers robust, flexible industrial identification with advanced protocol and environmental compatibility.

Bridge Between Control Level and IT

The IDENTControl Compact B40 connects production networks with IT systems. For this purpose, the evaluation unit features a multiprotocol Ethernet interface with an integrated switch and supports PROFINET and EtherNet/IP. This allows the device to be integrated into PLC architectures from different manufacturers.

In addition, the device provides a REST API for connection to higher-level IT and IIoT systems. RFID data is therefore not limited to the control level, but can also be used in software environments for traceability, process monitoring and automated data capture. For system integrators and machine builders, this creates an interface that brings together field devices, control systems and IT in a consistent architecture.

Web Interface, Performance and Time Stamps

The evaluation unit is parameterized via a web interface. The connected IPH* read/write heads for LF, IQH* devices for HF and IUH* devices for UHF can be configured and commissioned through this interface.

Compared with previous models, the IDENTControl Compact B40 offers higher performance and faster processing speed. Automatic time synchronization via NTP/SNTP provides precise time stamps. In systems with multiple stations or distributed RFID read points, process events, read points and faults can be assigned more accurately in time.

Robust Field Installation in Industrial Environments

The IDENTControl Compact B40 is built into a compact, fully potted metal housing. With IP67 protection and an operating temperature range from -25 °C to 70 °C, it is designed for decentralized field installation and industrial environments.

The evaluation unit is suitable for applications in mechanical and plant engineering, the automotive industry, warehouse and conveyor technology, as well as retail and the apparel industry. In CNC machining centers, for example, RFID read/write heads identify workpieces, workpiece carriers or tools. On this basis, machines can automatically assign programs, parameters or production steps.

In intralogistics and conveyor systems, RFID enables the contactless identification of goods, containers or baggage items. In retail and the apparel industry, the focus is on the rapid capture of large item volumes, transparent inventories, omnichannel processes such as click & collect and traceability along the supply chain.

What the Cyber Resilience Act Means for RFID Components

The IDENTControl Compact B40 meets the requirements of the EU Cyber Resilience Act. The CRA applies to products with digital elements, including connected hardware and software. For industrial components, this means that cybersecurity begins at the stages of development, provision, update capability and long-term product maintenance.

Software updates can be carried out via the web interface. This aspect is becoming increasingly important for industrial users, as RFID components are operated more and more often in connected OT and IT environments. Security updates and long-term maintenance are therefore becoming key criteria when selecting identification hardware.
