NXP UCODE Nxm Expands RAIN RFID Beyond Identification

NXP is expanding its UCODE memory family with UCODE Nxm, a RAIN RFID IC with 880 bits of configurable EPC and user memory. The chip targets applications that need item-level data beyond identification, from industrial traceability to logistics and Digital Product Passport workflows.

Extended Memory Moves RAIN RFID Beyond Identification

RAIN UHF RFID is widely used to identify and track products, assets and containers. NXP argues that more applications now require the tag to carry data beyond a serial number. Extended on-chip memory can store product, process or traceability information with the item and keep it readable even when network connectivity is unavailable.

In manufacturing, build and process status can travel with a component. Healthcare and pharma applications can store expiry, lot and handling data, while logistics systems can use on-tag information for dispatch, receipt and container management.

“Each of these use cases asks more of the tag than a serial number ever did,” writes James Goodland, Director of RAIN RFID Solutions at NXP.

UCODE Nxm Offers 880 Bits of Configurable Memory

UCODE Nxm is the newest member of NXP’s UCODE memory family. The RAIN RFID IC provides 880 bits that can be divided between the Electronic Product Code and user memory banks.

Three configurations are selected during encoding. Designers can allocate up to 496 bits to EPC memory or up to 752 bits to user memory. This allows one IC to cover applications with different data requirements without introducing additional chip SKUs.

For system integrators, that flexibility can simplify designs spanning several product or process types. Identification-heavy applications can prioritize EPC capacity, while traceability applications can reserve more space for production, lifecycle or compliance data.

UCODE Nxm integrates configurable high-capacity memory and privacy safeguards to extend RAIN RFID functionality beyond basic identification.

Data Integrity Meets RF Performance

Memory Safeguard uses Error Correction Code technology to detect and correct potential bit errors. Standards-based Untraceable privacy can hide selected information on demand.

UCODE Nxm specifies a read sensitivity of -24 dBm and combines it with NXP’s Self-Adjust feature. Both functions are intended to support reliable tag operation in challenging RF environments.

From Traceability to Product Lifecycle Data

Extended memory can carry product status, lot and expiry information, provenance, authentication and compliance data directly on the tag. This gives manufacturers and supply chain partners access to relevant item-level information at different lifecycle stages without depending entirely on a continuously available backend connection.

NXP also positions extended-memory RAIN RFID for Digital Product Passport-related workflows. For solution designers, the practical question is which data should remain in backend systems and which information benefits from traveling directly with the physical product.
