UBX100: Scalable Sub-GHz Connectivity for the Next Generation of Smart Meters

NXP · June 12, 2025 · 3 min

NXP Semiconductors has unveiled the UBX100, a compact, ultra-low power sub-GHz* RF (Radio Frequency) transceiver engineered for Wireless M-Bus smart metering and ready for next-generation Wi-SUN FAN support.

Designed for long-range, reliable, and energy-efficient wireless communication, the UBX100 supports both automated meter reading (AMR) and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) — paving the way for smarter, more sustainable utility networks.

Unlocking Efficiency in Utility Monitoring

Smart meters have revolutionized energy and resource management, automating the collection of consumption, diagnostic, and status data. However, the shift toward AMI and real-time communication requires technology that balances performance, power efficiency, and scalability.

UBX100 delivers on all fronts — supporting Wireless M-Bus in modes S, T, and C, and optimized for submetering scenarios in multi-tenant buildings, campuses, or industrial environments.

Key Highlights of the UBX100

  • 🔋 Ultra-Low Power:

    • 11 mA receive (RX), 600 nA deep sleep

    • Prolonged battery life in smart meters and wireless sensors

  • 📡 Long-Range Communication:

    • Sub-GHz RF operation with up to +14 dBm output power

    • Excellent RF performance for dense urban and rural deployments

  • 🔐 Secure, Standards-Compliant Design:

    • Supports encryption profiles A, B, D (Modes 5, 7, 10)

    • Fully compliant with EN 13757-3/-4/-7 and OMS® v4.5.1

  • 📦 Compact Integration:

    • 7x7 mm HVQFN48 package

    • Works seamlessly with NXP’s MCX microcontroller portfolio via SPI

A Full System Solution – Ready to Deploy

The UBX100 is supported by MCUXpresso tools, MCX Freedom boards, and the OM-UBX100-001 development kit. Developers benefit from a unified platform — from protocol stack integration to field-ready prototypes.

The software stack, developed by STACKFORCE, includes an OMS®** Wireless M-Bus stack (evaluation license included in SDK), ensuring fast prototyping and interoperability across metering environments.

Beyond M-Bus: Wi-SUN Support in H2 2025

The UBX100 will soon support Wi-SUN FAN, a self-healing, long-range mesh protocol ideal for city-scale networks like street lighting, smart meters, and environmental sensing. Based on IEEE 802.15.4-2015 and IPv6, Wi-SUN enables:

  • Secure, IP-based two-way communication

  • Massive scalability with mesh topology

  • Seamless integration into existing IT systems

NXP is collaborating with Exegin Technologies, a leader in mesh networking software, to integrate Wi-SUN protocol stacks optimized for the UBX100. The joint solution will ensure rapid adoption and secure, standards-based wireless infrastructure across industries.

Trusted Performance, Faster Time to Market

“The UBX100 gives developers a robust, low-power wireless platform that’s ready for the evolving demands of smart meters, industrial IoT, and smart city infrastructure,” said Frank Graeber, Product Marketing Manager at NXP. “Our goal was to enable faster development cycles with a solution that’s scalable, standards-compliant, and easy to integrate.”

Target Applications

  • Electric, gas, and water smart meters

  • Submetering in residential and commercial buildings

  • Wireless sensors for flow, pressure, and diagnostics

  • Smart street lighting and infrastructure control systems

  • Battery-operated devices requiring long-range, low-energy RF
