IDCRAFT Simplifies HF RFID and NFC Integration into Devices
Ultra-compact RFID reader module integrates MIFARE, DESFire, and ISO 15693 into devices, terminals, and machine controls.
How can RFID and NFC functions be integrated directly into machines, terminals, or control panels without having to develop dedicated reader electronics and complex card protocols?
With the CT modEAx900, IDCRAFT offers a compact HF RFID and NFC reader module for embedded applications. On a board measuring just 35 × 30 mm, the module combines RFID hardware with a 32-bit processor and integrated command sets for various transponder technologies.
The module is suitable for applications such as access control, time and attendance tracking, operator identification on machines, as well as vending machines and industrial terminals. It can be integrated into various device architectures via USB, TTL-UART, or RS485.
Integrating RFID Functionality Directly into Device Electronics
When developing RFID-enabled devices, manufacturers must consider more than just the antenna and RF electronics. Communication with different card types, authentication methods, and data structures also requires development effort.
This is where the CT modEAx900 comes in. The module handles card-specific processes such as MIFARE authentication, file management on DESFire cards, and access to ISO-15693 transponders.
The host controller communicates with the module via short binary commands. This allows developers to integrate RFID functions into their applications without having to fully implement the supported card protocols themselves.
Four Interface Options for Different Applications
The module is based on the NXP CLRC663 reader IC, which is combined with a 32-bit processor. The reader module operates at 13.56 MHz and supports, among others, ISO 14443 A/B, ISO 15693, ISO 18000-3 Mode 3, and FeliCa.
Four variants are available to meet different integration requirements:
USB Virtual COM Port: Communication via a virtual serial interface
USB PC/SC: Integration as a PC/SC-compatible card reader
TTL-UART: Direct communication with embedded controllers
RS485: Connection via a serial bus, for example in industrial devices
The module supports, among others, MIFARE Classic, Ultralight, Plus, and DESFire. The board measures 35 × 30 mm and operates at 5 V DC with a maximum current of 250 mA.
Flexible Antenna Integration Behind Device Front Panels
IDCRAFT offers various antenna options for integration into existing enclosures. An external antenna can be connected to the reader module via a U.FL connector.
The modAx3035 antenna has the same basic dimensions as the module and can be placed directly on top of it or positioned separately using a 10 cm-long cable.
This allows the antenna to be placed, for example, behind a glass or plastic user interface, while the reader electronics are housed inside the device.
With a MIFARE Classic card in ISO card format, the module achieves a typical read range of approximately 50 mm. The actual achievable range depends, among other factors, on the antenna position, the installation environment, and the transponder used.
IDCRAFT Explorer Simplifies Development and Diagnostics
In addition to the hardware, IDCRAFT provides IDCRAFT Explorer, a demo and evaluation software package for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
The software assists developers with setup, testing RFID commands, and analyzing communication between the host system and the reader module.
This includes a live trace that displays the transmitted data frames in decoded form. The recorded data can be exported in formats such as text, CSV, JSONL, or pcapng for further analysis with Wireshark.
The “Copy as Code” feature is particularly useful for software development: Executed commands can be directly imported as program calls for C, C#, or Python.
In addition, command sequences can be recorded and re-executed. Diagnostic functions assist in analyzing response times and read ranges.
The Explorer also offers specialized user interfaces for various transponder families, including MIFARE Classic, Ultralight, DESFire, ISO 15693, ICODE, and FeliCa.
Open-Source SDK for Six Programming Languages
For integration into custom applications, IDCRAFT provides an open-source SDK under the Apache 2.0 license. It includes implementations for Rust, C, C#, Python, Java, and TypeScript.
A reader simulator allows developers to create and test parts of the host application even without connected RFID hardware. In addition, a protocol description and shared test data are available for the various programming languages.
In this way, IDCRAFT addresses not only hardware integration but also software development—from initial functional tests and protocol analysis to integration into the finished application.
