Eight FSC-certified wood types, customizable shapes and RFID encoding options give hotels, chalets and resorts an alternative to conventional plastic key cards.

A hotel room key is more than a way to open a door. It is one of the first objects guests receive when they arrive, something they carry throughout their stay and often encounter several times a day. Why shouldn't it reflect the character of the property itself?

With winter approaching, Global Tag is highlighting its wooden RFID key cards and customizable wooden tags for hotels, mountain chalets, luxury resorts and wellness facilities. The solutions combine contactless access-control technology with the warmth and individual appearance of natural wood.

Eight Wood Types, One Individual Hotel Identity

Global Tag's RFID Wood Card is manufactured from FSC-certified wood and available in eight varieties: basswood, maple, walnut, bamboo, beech, cherry, oak and sapele.

Each offers a different color, grain and texture. Dark walnut can complement the atmosphere of a mountain lodge, while lighter maple or bamboo may suit a contemporary wellness resort.

The cards measure 85.5 × 54 × 1.3 mm and weigh approximately four grams, retaining the familiar format of a conventional hotel key card.

Hotels can customize the cards with logos, graphics and individual identification elements. Available options include offset printing in up to four colors, laser engraving, serial numbers, QR codes and barcodes.

For properties seeking something more distinctive, Global Tag's RFID Wood Custom Mold range extends these possibilities to mini cards, discs and individually developed shapes. Graphic renderings and 3D samples help customers evaluate designs and test functionality before production.

How RFID Works Inside a Wooden Key Card

The natural material provides the visible and tactile experience, while the embedded RFID inlay handles identification.

When a compatible RFID credential is presented to an electronic door reader, the reader communicates wirelessly with the chip inside the wooden card. The access-control system then processes the credential data and determines whether access should be granted.

Global Tag supports LF, HF, NFC and UHF RFID technologies, with chip options including MIFARE Classic, MIFARE DESFire, ICODE, NTAG and selected UHF solutions.

Dual-frequency configurations are also available. Two RFID inlays can be integrated into a single wooden credential, enabling combinations such as HF/NFC and UHF where different identification technologies are required.

For hospitality operators, the decisive factor is compatibility with their installed access-control infrastructure. Global Tag offers customer-specific encoding, including hotel door-lock applications, and provides samples to verify the required configuration.

From Hotel Rooms to Spas and Wellness Areas

In modern hospitality environments, a single guest credential can serve several purposes. Depending on the installed access-control system, wooden RFID cards can be used for hotel rooms, spa entrances, wellness areas and other facilities reserved for authorized guests.

Custom-shaped wooden tags provide additional options where a conventional card format is less practical. Hotels can therefore choose different formats for specific applications while maintaining a consistent design throughout the property.

For guests, the technology remains discreet and easy to use. For operators, the credentials integrate into existing access-control processes, provided the appropriate chip technology and encoding are selected.

A Natural Alternative to PVC Cards

Wooden RFID cards offer hotels an alternative to conventional PVC-based credentials. The use of FSC-certified wood provides a material choice for properties that value responsible sourcing and want to incorporate natural elements into everyday guest services.

Designed for years of use under normal operating conditions, the cards combine the distinctive appearance and texture of wood with the practical requirements of hospitality environments. Their actual service life depends on handling and operating conditions.
