FEIG ELECTRONIC, a trusted partner of Think WIoT, is expanding the UHF RFID reader ID LRU500i-BD to include OSDP support. With this update, FEIG integrates automatic vehicle identification via UHF RFID with modern access control systems. Wiegand support remains available in parallel. The reader can thus be used in both existing access control systems and new OSDP-based infrastructures.

UHF RFID for Automatic Vehicle Identification

Factory entrances, logistics centers, parking garages, and secured operational areas require unique vehicle identification before barriers or gates are released.

The FEIG ID LRU500i-BD was developed for this purpose. This compact UHF RFID reader is based on the proven ID LRU500i and combines an integrated antenna, RFID vehicle identification, and a traffic light function in a single device.

An RFID transponder on the vehicle provides its identity. The reader detects this contactlessly and transmits the data to the connected access control system. There, the system verifies whether the vehicle is authorized to enter.

UHF RFID identifies the vehicle; the access control system determines authorization.

OSDP complements the established Wiegand interface

A new feature is support for OSDP, the Open Supervised Device Protocol.

Wiegand has been one of the established interfaces for access control for decades. In a traditional setup, the reader transmits identification data unidirectionally to the host system. This interface remains relevant for numerous existing installations.

OSDP operates bidirectionally. The reader and the access control system can exchange information in both directions. This enables closer integration of the reader into modern access control architectures and communication that goes beyond the mere transmission of identification data.

The ID LRU500i-BD supports both interfaces. OSDP thus expands integration options without excluding existing Wiegand applications.

A Reader for Existing Systems, Retrofits, and New Construction

It is precisely this combination that is relevant for system integrators and operators. Many existing access control systems continue to use Wiegand, while new access control systems are increasingly relying on OSDP.

With the ID LRU500i-BD, UHF RFID vehicle identification can remain on the same reader platform. Existing systems can continue to be operated via Wiegand, while OSDP can be used for retrofits and new installations.

This reduces the number of different reader variants and simplifies planning, procurement, integration, and service. At the same time, the communication architecture of an access control solution can be further developed without having to change the RFID reader platform.

FEIG is thus expanding the ID LRU500i-BD from a UHF RFID reader for vehicle identification into a more flexible interface between the vehicle, RFID, and access control.
