Cisco Brings Wi-Fi 7 and URWB to Critical Outdoor Networks
Cisco has introduced the Wireless 9177 Series, a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 access point family for demanding outdoor environments. AFC, integrated URWB, flexible antennas and copper or fiber uplinks target industrial sites, transport networks, campuses and venues.
Wi-Fi 7 for Operational Outdoor Networks
Outdoor Wi-Fi increasingly supports operational applications rather than only guest access. Industrial IoT systems, security video, mobile equipment and transport telemetry require stable connectivity across yards, ports, campuses and other exposed environments.
The Cisco Wireless 9177 Series uses 4×4:4 operation in the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands, providing a total of 12 spatial streams. Wi-Fi 7 Multi-Link Operation, or MLO, can use multiple links to maintain performance when an individual frequency band is congested.
AFC Opens the 6 GHz Band Outdoors
Integrated Automated Frequency Coordination, or AFC, enables standard-power use of the 6 GHz band outdoors where regulations permit it. The mechanism coordinates channel and transmission power to protect existing radio services while making additional spectrum and wider channels available.
Integrated GPS and GNSS provide the location information required for AFC. The positioning capability can also support location-related functions within outdoor network deployments.
URWB for Mobile Assets and Wireless Backhaul
The series integrates Cisco Ultra-Reliable Wireless Backhaul, or URWB. The technology is intended for locations where installing fiber is impractical or costly and for mobile systems that must remain connected while moving between access points.
Cisco specifies handoffs of less than 10 milliseconds, multigigabit throughput and make-before-break roaming. With this approach, a new connection is established before the current connection is released.
This capability is relevant for automated guided vehicles, port cranes and other moving assets that transmit operational, sensor or video data. The access point can connect Wi-Fi 7 client devices while simultaneously operating as a wireless backhaul bridge.
For system integrators, URWB provides another option for linking remote outdoor areas without installing a wired connection at every access point location.
Three Models and Flexible Uplinks
Cisco offers three versions for different RF and coverage requirements. The CW9177I uses integrated omnidirectional antennas, while the CW9177D provides integrated directional coverage. The CW9177E supports external antennas for application-specific RF designs.
Copper and fiber uplinks are supported through 10 Gbps multigigabit Ethernet and a dual-rate 1/10 Gbps SFP/SFP+ port. This allows existing copper infrastructure to be reused or fiber to be installed for outdoor connections beyond the conventional 100-meter Ethernet limit.
From Industrial Sites to Enterprise Campuses
Cisco identifies industrial sites, ports, stadiums, transport infrastructure and enterprise campuses as principal application areas. Potential deployments include sensor and video backhaul, connectivity for mobile equipment, rail telemetry, employee access and wireless links between buildings.
For solution providers, deployment planning must consider local regulations for outdoor 6 GHz operation, antenna patterns, mobility requirements, backhaul capacity and the available physical infrastructure.
The unified hardware can be managed on premises through Cisco wireless controllers or through Meraki cloud management. This allows organizations to select a management model without changing the access point hardware.
Flexible Cloud or On-Premises Management
The 9177 Series is based on Cisco’s unified hardware architecture. Organizations can manage the access points either through the cloud-based Cisco Meraki platform or on premises using a Cisco Catalyst 9800 Wireless Controller. This allows the management model to be aligned with the existing network architecture and operational requirements.
