Overview

Fast, accurate checkout without scanning individual products

The Times-7 RFID self-checkout configuration enables retailers to validate all tagged products inside a shopping bag or tote simultaneously. Built around the A1163 True NearField™ antenna, the solution creates a precisely controlled RFID read zone directly within the checkout kiosk.

Customers can leave their purchases inside the bag throughout the transaction. The system detects and validates approximately 30 to 50 RFID-tagged items at once, displays the transaction details and allows the customer to complete payment without scanning each product individually.

Controlled near-field RFID reading

The A1163 antenna is flush-mounted within the kiosk structure and positioned close to the designated bag area. Its near-field design concentrates RFID detection within a clearly defined zone while reducing unwanted reads from surrounding merchandise, customers or adjacent checkout lanes.

The controlled read zone supports reliable item detection even when bags contain densely packed products or mixed materials, including liquid-filled containers and products containing metal.

How the self-checkout process works

The customer places the shopping bag or tote on the integrated bag hook. Once the bag enters the controlled RFID read zone, the A1163 antenna reads all tagged products simultaneously.

The kiosk software validates the detected items and presents the results on the display. The customer can confirm the transaction and complete payment using the terminal positioned outside the primary RFID read zone.

The configuration consists of:

  • One Times-7 A1163 True NearField™ antenna

  • A defined RFID validation zone

  • A customer-facing display

  • A bag or tote holder

  • An integrated payment terminal

Accurate validation with fewer stray reads

Near-field RFID technology enables item-level detection within the intended bag area. The clearly defined read zone helps prevent RFID tags outside the kiosk from being included in the transaction.

This controlled configuration is particularly important in retail environments with several checkout stations operating close together.

Simultaneous processing of complete shopping bags

The system removes the need to unpack, scan and repack products individually. Reading all tagged items together can shorten checkout processes, minimise manual handling and reduce the need for staff intervention.

Customers benefit from a faster and more convenient transaction, while retailers gain a scalable RFID foundation for automated checkout processes.

Discreet kiosk integration

The slim, low-profile construction of the A1163 supports flush installation inside checkout counters and kiosk structures. The antenna can therefore be integrated without occupying additional customer-facing space or significantly changing the kiosk design.

Key benefits

  • Simultaneous detection of approximately 30 to 50 tagged items

  • Full-bag validation without individual product scanning

  • Precisely controlled near-field RFID read zone

  • Reduced stray reads from nearby products and checkout lanes

  • Reliable performance with densely packed mixed merchandise

  • Slim antenna design for discreet kiosk integration

  • Faster transactions and reduced staff intervention

  • Scalable configuration for RFID-enabled retail environments

Customised antenna configurations

This setup provides a representative deployment configuration for RFID-enabled self-checkout applications. For projects with specific dimensions, materials, read-zone requirements or kiosk designs, Times-7 also offers customised RFID antenna development.
