Parts of the Hochtaunus region in Germany, including the town Neu-Anspach, have long faced the challenge of flooding after heavy rainfall which led to significant property damage, economic loss and community distress. Neu-Anspach is one of the first towns in the Hochtaunus region to have a LoRaWAN network to monitor flood level of the nearby river.
Together with the companies melita.io and m2m Germany, the town has set up this future proof wireless network. Sensors were installed at key locations along the river, including canal inlets and within the sewer systems. The connected IoT-platform allows constant monitoring and early detection of rising water levels and sends alarms for prompt emergency response. Additional applications in the future could be early fire detection or noise measurement on busy streets.
