Wireless temperature monitoring with RFID in autoclaves and sterilization

The TELID®310.advance from microsensys is a semi-passive RFID temperature data logger designed for autoclaves and sterilization processes. It has been developed to monitor thermal processes in demanding environments such as steam sterilization, laboratory workflows, and industrial validation or cleaning processes.

The system combines contactless RFID communication with integrated temperature sensing. This enables the device to record temperature curves during sterilization cycles and retrieve them afterward. In applications where RFID in autoclaves is used for process monitoring, the logger provides reliable documentation of achieved temperatures and sterilization conditions.

The data logger operates in the HF RFID band at 13.56 MHz and complies with ISO 14443B. Wireless communication with compatible microsensys readers takes place via closed coupling. This contactless interface allows access to measurement data without electrical connectors, simplifying the use of RFID in sterilization environments or other humid and high-temperature conditions.

An integrated semiconductor temperature sensor measures temperatures from –30 °C to +140 °C, making the logger suitable for both cryogenic processes and typical steam sterilization cycles in autoclaves. Measurement data is stored in an internal EEPROM memory with capacity for up to 8,000 samples, enabling detailed documentation of temperature profiles during validation, inspection, or maintenance procedures.

The device is housed in a hermetically sealed stainless steel and glass enclosure with IP67 protection. This robust construction protects the electronics from moisture, pressure, and chemical exposure. With a diameter of 27 mm and a thickness of 13 mm, the compact cylindrical design allows installation on metal or non-metal surfaces without special mounting requirements.

A built-in real-time clock and programmable sampling intervals between 1 second and 59 minutes allow flexible measurement configurations. Users can therefore record precise temperature profiles during defined sterilization cycles in autoclaves.

Power is supplied by an integrated 400 mAh lithium primary cell, providing a typical lifetime of up to three years, depending on operating conditions. Recorded data can be retrieved using compatible microsensys readers for desktop, industrial, or mobile applications and evaluated with dedicated software.

Within the TELID® sensor platform, additional variants are available. These include models with the temperature sensor integrated directly in the housing as well as versions with external probe sensors, designed for faster thermal response when measuring temperature curves in steam sterilizers and autoclaves.
